Learn2Change Online Talk on the suspension of USAID and consequences for democracy and sustainability, March 27, 2025, 3-5 pm CET, online via Zoom

If you are interested to exchange ideas with activists from all over the world on education, democracy, sustainability and global justice etc., you are invited to participate in the Learn2Change online talk. The Learn2Change Online Talks take place 6-8 times a year, in general on the last Thursday of the month. The Online Talk in March 2025 is on the 90-days suspension of USAID and on the general politics of the US government and its impacts on democracy and sustainability.

The new U.S. administration under Donald Trump has frozen funding for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), causing significant turmoil in international development cooperation. USAID has focused on key areas such as global healthcare, food security, poverty reduction, provision of emergency aid, education, and strengthening of democratic institutions. Before Trump’s recent decision, the United States was the world’s largest donor, financing 47 percent of global humanitarian aid in 2024.

The 90-day suspension of USAID funding has already had severe consequences. International aid organisations report that countless humanitarian programs are directly and indirectly affected by the halt and achievement of recent decades of work towards sustainability, justice and democracy are jeopardized.

In this Learn2Change Online Talk we will have the opportunity to explore together with experts from different countries the broader implications of this policy shift, its specific impacts on their work and in their countries, and what the future may hold for international development cooperation and solidarity.
